I could not decide whether I wanted to write a review of the Vampire Academy Series as a whole or each book individually. I decided to write them each separately b/c they are all unique and deserve their own review.

What made me want to read this book? Honestly the cover design of the first book. The first book’s cover design is my favorite. While reading this book, the girl from the cover became “Rose” in my mind.
Synopsis (from barnesandnoble.com): St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school—it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's—the very place where they're most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
What I Liked: I love that Rose is so kick ass! I am a sucker for strong female heroines. I thought the whole idea of a school for Vampires was really unique. I like the chemistry between Rose and Dimitri. Their relationship is subtle and not as hot as I normally prefer, but this is a Young Adult novel. I enjoyed the overall writing style. I think I enjoyed the story more because it was written in first person.
What I did NOT like: Lissa, to me was too boring or maybe she just seemed too vulnerable. Not that I hated Lissa, but I didn’t connect to her. I thought the beginning of the story started off kind of slow, but once it got started it was really good. I wished that Dimitri would have been a little more of an alpha male or at least more aggressive, I mean he does need to keep Rose in line.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. The story is entertaining and fun. This is not a story I would re-read but it is worth being read at least once.
