This is the first book of Catherine Mulvany’s I have ever read. I liked it but did not love it. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal.
Synopsis (barnesandnoble.com): When the sun goes down, passion and danger light the darkness....
Wicked is the Night
Nevada White is on the run from a strange psychic gift that enables her to see evil...from two deadly predators who are tracking her every move...and from a past she can't recall. The only clue to her identity is a gold amulet, torn from her neck in a struggle with her pursuers. With no safe haven, she crashes into the life of gorgeous race car driver Trick Grainger near a small California town. And though it's clear Nevada spells trouble, she arouses all Trick's protective instincts...and a whole lot more. He offers her sanctuary at the Victorian mansion, said to be haunted, that's been in the Grainger family since the 1850s. But although Nevada is deeply attracted to Trick, how can she hope for love when even her name is a fake? As a series of eerie, violent deaths plague the area, Nevada and Trick race to uncover the link between Nevada's lost amulet and her only known family: her half brother, a San Francisco politician with an insatiable bloodlust. And even if they survive the physical danger, the greatest threat comes from within, because Nevada has no idea who she is, where she came from, or what she might have done....
What I liked: Catherine Mulvany’s writing style is engaging and overall I did like the book. I thought the story of Nevada White was very interesting. Nevada is a girl who escapes a horrible place. She cannot remember her past. She meets ex-race car driver Trick, who offers to let her stay with him and clean a mansion he intends to sell. I really like the name Nevada White. Trick has an eye patch and you gotta love that. While not the most compatible fictional couple, they do have their moments.
What I did not like: When I see the word wicked in a title I think of the book being sinful and naughty- in a good way. While this book was a good read, I do think it was not appropriately title. There was not a whole lot of wickedness going on in this book. I partly blame that on Trick. I like the swoon worthy men of books to be a little more aggressive. What steamy scenes there were are toward the end of the book. I wished the paranormal element would have been introduced sooner, it was like while reading this book I kept waiting for it. When some secrets started to unravel the story fortunately picks up.
While this book could have been more suspenseful, it did keep me entertained all the way through. I will be keeping my eye out for future books by Catherine Mulvany.
